A three-day national workshop on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research began at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on September 1, 2026. Titled AAISR-2026, the event brought together faculty, researchers, and students from diverse academic disciplines to discuss AI's role as a force multiplier in research.

BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi emphasized that AI, supported by technologies like natural language processing and computer vision, is no longer confined to specialized fields. He noted that tasks previously taking a year could now be completed in a month or even 15 days. Chaturvedi stressed the importance of researchers becoming effective AI users without needing deep technical expertise.
Interdisciplinary Learning and Practical Tools
Prof Sanjay Kumar Singh of IIT-BHU highlighted initiatives to promote AI among students, including a dedicated laboratory and learning platform. The platform offers AI and machine learning resources, expert-led content, and hands-on sessions. Singh encouraged students from fields like mining, metallurgy, and pharmacy to use domain-specific datasets for AI solutions.
Bridging Gaps in Physical Education
Prof Sushma Ghildyal, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, underscored the need for physical education and sports to embrace AI-driven technological transformation. She praised the workshop's focus on contemporary topics and welcomed efforts to establish a Faculty of Physical Education at BHU.
Expanding Participation Through Hybrid Format
The workshop, organized by BHU's Department of Physical Education, featured experts from institutions like Central University of Haryana and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The hybrid format aimed to facilitate interaction among researchers beyond geographical boundaries, with sessions including expert lectures and panel discussions.

Prof Vikram Singh, Head of the Department of Physical Education, urged participants to engage with open-access AI tools and collaborate across disciplines. The workshop concluded with a book-opening ceremony for "Health and Physical Education," reinforcing the event's interdisciplinary focus.
