Meta and Nigeria's government launch AI academy
Meta has partnered with Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) and Robotics Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) to launch an AI academy. The initiative, called AI Academy Nigeria, aims to expand access to AI skills and support local innovation.
Three streams of training and funding
The academy will operate through three programs: AI Skills Development, a Startup Pitchathon, and a Developer Bootcamp. The Skills Development program will offer courses on generative AI fundamentals, including Meta's Llama models, prompt engineering, and AI applications in data analytics and social media marketing. The 3MTT (Three Million Technical Talent) community will have access to these courses.
Startup Pitchathon with cash prizes
The Startup Pitchathon targets early-stage Nigerian startups using Meta's AI technologies. Applications close on August 21, with 10 finalists selected to pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3. Two winners will receive $5,000 in cash, $2,000 in Meta ad credits, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Meta's AI Summit in Istanbul in November.
Developer Bootcamp for advanced training
The Developer Bootcamp will focus on hands-on AI product development, helping participants transition from learning concepts to building functional solutions. Meta's Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa, Sade Dada, stated the program aims to strengthen Nigeria's AI talent pipeline and support scalable innovations.
Focus on practical AI applications
Courses will cover Building Generative AI Apps with Llama, Multimodal Llama 3.2, and AI 101. The curriculum emphasizes real-world applications, including social media marketing and data analytics, aligning with Nigeria's push for digital economy growth.
Broader implications for Nigeria's tech ecosystem
The partnership leverages Nigeria's National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) to foster local AI development. By combining training, funding, and exposure to global platforms, the initiative seeks to position Nigeria as a hub for AI innovation in Africa.
How to participate
Interested startups can apply for the Pitchathon before August 21. Developers and professionals can join the Skills Development program through the 3MTT platform. Winners of the Pitchathon will gain visibility at Meta's global AI Summit in November.
